because you find most of the city’s biggest attractions here, such as Millennium Park, Chicago Riverwalk, and more.

Did you know this city has around 77 unique community areas? No, I am not joking!

Honestly, I recently spent time in Chicago myself, and I didn’t know much about the city outside the Loop before going.

But once I started exploring, I found there are many interesting Chicago local neighborhoods to explore.

The Loop: Start With The Chicago Classics

If you are looking for epic Chicago areas to explore, especially on your first trip, then of course start with the Loop.

I know we are exploring the best neighborhoods in Chicago apart from the tourist areas, but you really can’t miss the city center on your first trip to Chicago.

This is where you will find some of the best Chicago attractions.

You can watch the Cloud Gate, walk through Millennium Park, visit the Art Institute of Chicago, and more without needing to travel far.

For architecture buffs, this is the perfect place to enjoy!

You can take the amazing Chicago architecture cruise here and admire the skyscrapers from the river!

If you want to start with classic Chicago sightseeing, then this is one of the best Chicago areas to explore.

River North: Go For Food, Art And Nightlife

I feel one of the coolest neighborhoods in Chicago is River North.

It has more energy and is perfect for people who like restaurants, bars, galleries, and nightlife.

And the best part? It’s close to downtown, so you can easily do both in a day.

Here, you will find galleries with an interesting art and design scene, and Marina City’s famous ‘corn cob’ towers.

I love to come here in the evening, explore a little, have dinner, and then enjoy a few drinks.

The vibe here is completely different once the sun goes down.

Streeterville: Combine Navy Pier With The Lakefront

If Navy Pier is on your list of things to do in Chicago, then Streeterville is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago to visit.

Navy Pier is, of course, the star of this area, but there are plenty of other things to do here as well,

such as the Centennial Wheel, boat cruises, shops, seasonal events, and more.

You can take some photos of the pier and then walk along the Lake Michigan lakefront as well.

Here, you will also find some of the best museums in Chicago, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

And for shopping enthusiasts, there is Magnificent Mile and Michigan Avenue nearby.

West Loop: Come Here Hungry

If food is a big part of your trip, then West Loop is one of the top Chicago local neighborhoods to explore.

This area is perfect for eating and has a completely different vibe from downtown.

One of the main places that you cannot skip is Randolph Street, which is also known as Restaurant Row.

You have both casual spots and high-end restaurants here to explore.

Wander around the streets, grab a coffee or drink, and observe the old architecture in one of the coolest neighborhoods in Chicago.

Lincoln Park: Parks, Beaches And A Relaxed Side Of Chicago

Lincoln Park is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago to visit for anyone who loves greenery and lakefront views.

Of course, one of the highlights is the huge Lincoln Park stretching along the lakefront where you can enjoy the views.

Plus, you can visit plenty of free Chicago attractions such as the Lincoln Park Zoo, Lincoln Park Conservatory,

Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, and more.

You can also spend time at North Avenue Beach or explore the neighborhood for food and coffee.

What I love about Lincoln Park is that it is not just a tourist attraction.

You will find residential streets, restaurants, and some boutiques along with some well-known attractions.

If you love biking or walking around neighborhoods, then don’t forget the 606, a 2.7-mile elevated trail.

This trail passes through some of the best Chicago local neighborhoods, including Wicker Park, Logan Square, and Humboldt Park.

But I wouldn’t plan my entire time here. Just pick a few things that you would like to see and then just wander around;

Who knows what you will come across.

For shopping, food, nightlife, street art, and a more local-feeling atmosphere, this is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago to visit.

One of the main attractions in this area is the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

Apart from that, you can explore several other sights such as the Obama Presidential Center,

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, the University of Chicago, and more.

For architecture and history lovers, the University of Chicago is a great place to explore!

I especially love Jackson Park, Osaka Garden, and Promontory Point. You can enjoy nature and lake views here.

So, this is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago for all kinds of visitors.

Pilsen: Go For The Murals, Art And Mexican Food

If you’re looking for the best neighborhoods in Chicago to visit for culture, then Pilsen definitely deserves a spot.

This is a major Mexican-American cultural center, and you will find colorful murals covering the buildings here.

Start exploring 18th Street and make your way to the National Museum of Mexican Art.

The entry is free here, and their collection includes Mexican art and culture across different periods.

Of course, we can’t forget the delicious food that can be enjoyed here, especially if you love Mexican cuisine.

There are plenty of Mexican restaurants and taquerias in this neighborhood, along with newer restaurants and cafes.

Trust me, if you want to enjoy Mexican culture, admire art and murals, and eat some of the best food in the city,

Okay, if you really want to go offbeat and to a Chicago neighborhood that not many explore, then Andersonville is the best choice.

You won’t find any major attractions here, but you can just walk around this neighborhood without rushing.

The main streets are where you will find cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops.

Plus, the area has strong Swedish influence along with a prominent LGBTQ+ community.

You can explore the Swedish American Museum here and also book a show at the Chicago Magic Lounge.

I personally just love walking around this neighborhood, browsing the shops, drinking coffee, and just having a relaxing day.
